The file is downloaded from the internet from the software manufacturer’s website and upon mounting the DMG file, a virtual disk is generated from where the user can either copy the application to the applications folder or run an installation script depending on the type of installation.The newer disk image file was used in place of the original IMG or image file which was used in earlier versions of mac that are classic mac operating systems. I cannot create an encrypted disk image. I have searched through the discussion forums here but have not found an answer. After I select the name, location, image format, encryption and I hit save, I get an error that says 'Unable to create '[file name].dmg'. (Resource busy)'. I've tried different locations, image format and encryption, but I keep getting the same message. Any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks.
NB: I want to create the disk image so that I can encrypt a few files with sensitive information. I do not want to use filevault, as I understand that it has downsides (e.g., free space needed to turn on and off, and backup with TM).

Luckily, OS X has a built-in feature that allows you to create an encrypted disk image containing whatever data you want inside the image. The only way to open the disk image is to enter the password. You can copy the disk image like a normal file and it will be unreadable unless unlocked on a Mac. Up vote 0 down vote. You can open encrypted dmg file with TransMac. It's a very nice software instead of dmg extractor (it's not free, that's why I don't like it). I opened my dmg encrypted file with it on deleted some things and that's all.

Looking to encrypt mac folder to prevent unauthorized access? Apple has a built-in feature to easily encrypt your mac folder by means of an encrypted image file. You don’t need any third-party programs for this.

Follow this guide to encrypting mac folder easily in few minutes. Download pip install mac.

Encrypt Mac Folder

If you know shell script, you can write s simple program that does that. Use hdiutil to change an encrypted disk password. Hdiutil chpass imagename It will interactively ask you for your previous password and new password so you have to use some pipes or maybe expect.

1. Open Disk Utility option. To find Disk Utility option:

  • Go to “Finder” icon > “Go” menu > Select “Utilities” from drop-down menu > Look for “Disk Utility” Icon (or follow: Command Key + Shift Key + U).
  • Alternatively, search Spotlight for “Disk Utility” to find this tool.

2. Open Disk Image from the menu. Under Disk Utility menu: Go to “File” > New > Disk Image from folder.

3. Place the folder you want to encrypt, and press Image button.

4. Select “read/write” if you want to give permissions to edit, otherwise select “128-bit AES encrypt” method.

5. Type your desired password, and make sure NOT to tick “Remember password in my keychain.” Otherwise, it is useless to encrypt if you choose to remember the password.

A password encrypted .dmg file will be created on the home screen. Once, your dmg file is created you can delete the folder.

The image file (.dmg) can be accessed by double clicking it to mount it in Finder menu. It will ask for password, type in your password and uncheck remember password in my keychain option.

After your .dmg file is mounted, you can access the contents of the folder. You can also add files and folder in the image file on which encryption will automatically apply.

There are also third party encryption tools are available for Mac. Free and paid alike, but this method is sufficient and recommended. You can also encrypt your startup disk and place more security on your Mac to prevent further unauthorized access.
